UCONN CB Darius Butler, who is making a case to be a late first round pick after a 4.38 at his pro day, is Willis McGahee’s cousin. When we talked to him at the combine, Butler spoke about his relationship with the former Bills back.
“I would say once a week I talk to him,” said Butler. “I talked to him during the season. The conversation usually focuses on what I’m doing. He tells me to stay focused.”
Barely recruited out of high school, since his charter school didn’t have a football program until he was a junior, Butler had to go play at UCONN as he was not recruited by any of the Florida schools. After his pro day he’s considered a late first round pick.
He claimed at the combine that he felt Miami and Baltimore were expressing the most interest in him. However, he might just be saying that since playing pro ball in his backyard would be “a dream” as he put it and playing in Baltimore would put him on the same team as his cousin McGahee. They share the same agent in Rosenhaus. Miami is in the right range for him with the 25th pick.
And McGahee is not his only relative that played in the NFL. Gene Atkins who played for the Dolphins and Saints in the 80’s and 90’s is his uncle.
