With Bryan Scott healthy and available and Donte Whitner practicing for the first time in three weeks there are many wondering how things will shake out at the safety position with Scott, Whitner and Byrd, who also practice Monday available to play. Whitner provided some insight Monday.
“I feel there will be instances where we’re on the field at the same time,” said Whitner. “Whether it’s Bryan (Scott) playing linebacker or me coming down in the box and playing linebacker. We’re doing some things in order to keep players that make plays on the football field. That’s what the coaches are doing and I commend them for that. We have some guys that are making plays. George (Wilson) is making a lot of plays. We’ve got a deep secondary. Credit goes to coach Catavolos for getting guys ready dand being able to plug guys in when other guys go down.”
In no way is Jairus Byrd coming off the field in light of the performances he’s had in his last four starts. So moving guys around positionally on defense looks like a real possibility. Bryan Scott again practiced with the linebackers Monday. We’ll have a better idea as to whether that’s a more lasting position switch Wednesday when installation of this week’s game plan begins.
Defensive coordinator has made use of a three safety alignment in the past particularly against good running teams like Tennessee and Jacksonville that are next on the schedule. So it will be interesting to see how the safeties are utilized in terms of where on the field and when in terms of down and distance.
