There were a number of NFL teams with head coach openings last offseason and apparently more than one strongly considered hiring Chan Gailey as their head coach.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter there were a couple of clubs that eyed Gailey as a finalist for their job.
Adam_Schefter Two teams said they considered hiring Chan Gailey last year, but questioned “sizzle” factor with fans. Great coach, but not popular w/ fans.
Give credit to Bills GM Buddy Nix for valuing substance over sizzle, as he even said he wasn’t going to be swayed by public opinion. He went with what his expertise in this game told him to.
“We covered the entire gamut and we did that because I wanted to be satisified that we had looked at all of the possible candidates that we could,” said Nix. “I told you also I wasn’t going to let outside forces make me go faster than I wanted to, make me do something that would be popular at the time and I was able to do that.”
My guess on the teams that were interested in Gailey last offseason are Denver (since he has history there) and either Cleveland or Detroit.
