While we cover the main Schobel question in our Countdown to Camp on the home page of Buffalobills.com (19 – Will Schobel officially retire?) what also needs to be considered is how that would impact Buffalo’s defense if he did in fact call it a career.
Obviously it would put a lot more pressure on second-year OLB Aaron Maybin to be the lead pass rushing threat. And though Maybin has 16 NFL games under his belt, he has never lined up as an OLB in a 3-4 defensive scheme on an NFL field. Executing his assignments consistently at game speed will be the first hurdle to clear let alone being productive as a pass rusher.
Fortunately for Maybin the 3-4 is so much more difficult for opposing offenses to decipher pre-snap that he should be afforded enough opportunities to make big plays for Buffalo’s defense.
