Free agent guard Chester Pitts, who visited One Bills Drive on Monday, is a proven NFL lineman, so why isn’t he on an NFL roster yet?
Pitts suffered a knee injury in Week 2 last year that landed him on injured reserve. His recovery has been a long process, but he reportedly worked out for a pair of clubs last week (Pittsburgh, Indianapolis) and was no doubt put through an array of medical tests with the Bills.
I’ve got to believe if the medical opinion is that his knee is able to withstand the rigors of the NFL game that Buffalo would be interested in acquiring an eight-year vet with over 100 starts under his belt. There is certainly a risk, but weighing that risk is a call reserved for the chief decision makers at One Bills Drive.
What should be noted here is that the Bills likely see Pitts as veteran depth for the interior of their offensive line, not starting material. The club has a lot of faith and stock in Levitre and Wood at the guard spots.
