In an exclusive Inside the Draft Room feature with Buffalobills.com Bills GM Buddy Nix outlined a lot of what went on and how they felt as the 2011 NFL draft unfolded on day one. In Nix’s opinion how the board fell for Buffalo at the top could not have gone better.
“I thought Denver would take one of three guys,” said Nix. “If they had taken Blaine Gabbert, I’d have been mildly surprised, but I knew they’d take Von Miller or Marcell. To be honest, Von Miller is a great player, a really great player, but for us, Marcell was the best choice to help us the most. He was the guy we wanted to get.”
That’s why in the video exclusive you see Nix pumping his fist when the Broncos in fact take Miller at two. It’s because he knew they were going to get their man.
Head coach Chan Gailey thought the Bills were in a ‘can’t lose’ situation all along.
“To be honest with you any one of the three that were at the top there I’d have been tickled to death,” he said. “We had three good players sitting there that we liked. There were a couple of more that could’ve squeezed there way up in there as well. So we felt good about the top part of the draft, even if we had to trade down a little bit we felt good about it.”
