With Shawne Merriman on the shelf for tonight’s preseason game against Denver, it’s a huge opportunity to solidify his spot on the roster with another strong performance against the Broncos.
Batten posted a pair of sacks in his debut last week after missing his entire rookie season. Now he’ll get time with the starting defense at weak side linebacker with Merriman sitting the game out. Antonio Coleman will also see some snaps in Merriman’s spot.
Earlier this week head coach Chan Gailey praised Batten for his efforts in camp thus far.
“He plays 100 miles per hour every snap,” said Gailey. “Every snap. His technique is getting better. His understanding of the game is getting better standing up and playing linebacker. He’s been a very pleasant surprise thus far.”
