NFL teams were 3-9 coming off the bye week as the Bills prepared to resume their season Sunday. Following Sunday’s win head coach Chan Gailey was very candid in sharing how he felt heading into the game against Washington.
“Scared to death,” he said. “It’s not something that’s normal. You’re not in your routine. You don’t know if your guys are back into it or not. We had a couple of guys late for meetings because they were not back into the routine. It makes you nervous as a coach. Can they all get it back together and work the way we’re supposed to work? They worked hard at practice don’t get me wrong, but just getting back into the speed of the game in a hurry having been away from it for so long.”
Ryan Fitzpatrick said with the new CBA rules stipulating that players had to get a minimum of four days off during the bye week there was an emphasis on re-focusing as soon as the players got back to One Bills Drive.
“There was a lot of talk to with this new way the bye week was going with the four days off that people weren’t coming out and playing well after their bye,” he said. “We didn’t really believe in that. We really stressed that we needed to come out, start fast, play well and the effort our defense had, obviously all we needed was three points to win that one.”
