Bills head coach Chan Gailey outlined why a move was necessary at the kicker position Wednesday with the team signing Brandon Coutu and placing Dave Rayner on I-R.
“He came up sore again Monday and he’s not sure he can be 100 percent,” said Gailey of Rayner. “You can’t take a chance when you walk out there if it’s one kick and done on a cold day or something like that you can’t afford to have that so that’s why we had to make the move.”
Rayner had a groin problem coming out of the San Diego game in Week 14, but kicked the past two games. Whether Rayner’s condition worsened was not revealed, but being far less than a lock to kick in a game from start to finish was enough to bring in another kicker.
