While it seems unlikely that the Bills would use the franchise tag on free agent WR Stevie Johnson, Bills Assistant GM Doug Whaley did not rule it out.
Appearing on a live chat with Bills fans, Whaley when asked if the team would use the tag on Johnson to avoid letting him sign elsewhere without any compensation he responded as follows.
“There’s a possibility (using the tag) may happen, but right now we’re focused on getting a long term deal accomplished because the tag would be a short term fix,” said Whaley. “We’re trying to build this team to be competitive over the long haul.”
Obviously a long term contract would be the ideal situation for the Bills with Johnson, but at this point it’s clear Buffalo is keeping all options open.
