’95 Bills not a bad comparison

Posted by Chris Brown on March 29, 2012 – 8:25 am

With our front page story on Buffalobills.com comparing the free agent adds of this offseason to those of the 1995 club coming off a disappointing season prior, the outcome of that ’95 season wasn’t too bad either.

Not much was expected from a ’95 Bills squad that most analysts felt was on the decline after a 7-9 season the year before, and their first non-playoff appearance since 1987. But their defense was helped tremendously by the additions of Bryce Paup and Ted Washington, with Paup going on to earn NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The team won the AFC East title and their Wild Card playoff game against Miami (see: David White INT) 37-22. The next week they fell to the eventual AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers 40-21, a game in which they did not have Bruce Smith, who was hospitalized with the flu. Jim Kelly was also knocked out of that game, though he did return late.
