There are some outside observers that have maintained that Buffalo’s quick passing game reduces the urgency somewhat to draft a left tackle prospect early in the draft. I thought that’d be a good question to ask Bills head coach Chan Gailey.
In my one-on-one interview with coach Gailey in the Bills Draft Special that will air on WKBW-TV Channel 7 on Thursday at 7, Gailey gave me the following answer when I asked if the need for an offensive tackle is reduced knowing Fitz gets the ball out in about 2.5 seconds on average.
“You always want to improve,” he said. “If you get better linemen you can hold the ball a little bit longer. Your run game gets better. If anything we could use some depth there. We don’t know if we’ve got a guy that can play for 10 years or not. We might already. The question is are you trying to upgrade your football team at critical positions? Tackle is a critical position in the game of football today.”
Be sure to hear more from Gailey in our hour long run up to the 2012 NFL draft on WKBW-TV Channel 7 Thursday evening at 7 pm.
