Inside The Bills

Fred a frequent route runner

Posted by Chris Brown on July 11, 2012 – 12:15 pm

While most Bills fans remember how much C.J. Spiller was split out as a wide receiver last season after injuries struck the position hard in 2011, some might be surprised to know that Fred Jackson has a ton of route running experience as well.

Jackson cracked the top 10 of Pro Football Focus’ measure of backs that ran the most routes over the past three seasons. Here’s their rankings list with how many routes each back has run since the 2009 season.

1 - Ray Rice BAL – 1199
2 – LeSean McCoy PHI – 1152
3 – Chris D. Johnson TEN – 1042
4 – Steven Jackson STL – 1012
5 – Matt Forte CHI – 948
6 – Darren Sproles NO – 931
7 – Maurice Jones-Drew JAC – 864
8 – Frank Gore SF – 842
9 – LaDainian Tomlinson (retired) – 815
10 – Fred Jackson BUF – 797

Ironically, Jackson and Spiller finished with the same number of receptions last season as each pulled in 39 in the pass game, good for third best on the team last season behind Stevie Johnson and David Nelson. Jackson average 11.3 yards per catch, while Spiller averaged 6.9.
