Ryan Fitzpatrick is supremely familiar with the inner workings of Chan Gailey’s offense. He’s been immersed in it for three years. That’s why when asked how Vince Young is absorbing the system he admitted it’s no easy task.
“It’s a tough offense to get,” said Fitzpatrick. “For him it was good to get the OTAs and minicamp so just like the rookies he was able to digest it. It’s a new system for him with new terminology and that’s not easy as a quarterback. It’s been very vanilla the first few days, but as we get going here we’ll see how much he can process and how much he can retain that stuff that we learned back in the OTAs and carried it onto the field.”
Head coach Chan Gailey has indicated that camp really begins when the pads go on, so the pace of play installation will probably increase. That won’t make it any easier on Young and anyone else that is new to the scheme.
“The thing that jumps out about him is he’s a great athlete,” said Fitzpatrick of Young. “He’s a guy that can really throw and spin the ball. We’ll see as we go how his progress is. I like to help those guys out and see how they improve.”
