One of the main reasons the defense dominated on the first day of padded practice was because of the depth of their defensive line. With all the talent they have up front they can come at you in waves.
Everyone is familiar with the top four which left to right has been Mario Williams, Marcell Dareus, Kyle Williams with Mark Anderson and Chris Kelsay rotating at the starting RDE spot. The second group however, could start for some other teams in the league with Shawne Merriman, Dwan Edwards, Spencer Johnson and whichever one of the Kelsay/Anderson combo is with the twos that day.
Add in still other players like Kellen Heard, Alex Carrington, Kyle Moore and Torell Troup (when he’s healthy enough to go in team drills) and you see why the offensive lines had their hands full. Especially without Eric Wood, who is still not doing team work and right tackle Erik Pears out with the groin injury.
“That’s where probably most of our depth is, the defensive line,” said Chan Gailey. “So I would expect that would happen here for a while until we can get this offensive line geared up to the speed of the game. It goes from shorts to pads, then to preseason games and it’s another speed. We have to gear it up to meet the challenges offensively.”
