The Bills had 14 penalties for a whopping 134 yards in their 7-6 preseason loss to Washington Thursday night. Eight of them were false starts and an illegal motion took a Bills touchdown from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Stevie Johnson off the board. Head coach Chan Gailey said those penalties are on him.
“That’s just undiscipilined and that’s my fault when we play that undisciplined,” said Gailey. “There may have been five illegal motion penalties and one alignment penalty that was a problem. That’s my fault I’ve got to get that straight.”
When told that false starts are mental errors by the player, Gailey still took the blame for those infractions as well.
“It’s awful,” he said. “Yeah those penalties are my fault. That’s just lack of discipline. That’s my responsibility instilling some discipline on this football team.”
In 2011 Buffalo had the fifth fewest penalties accepted against them in the league (86).
