With the Bills announcing the addition of 10 assistants to the coaching staff Tuesday there’s an interesting coaching dynamic concerning DE Mario Williams.
Anthony Weaver was hired as the team’s defensive line coach. Last year he was the Jets assistant D-line coach. More importantly Weaver had a seven-year playing career, which included a three-year stint with the Houston Texans (2006-08).
For those three years Weaver was Williams teammate. Now he’s his coach.
This kind of situation has probably happened before in the NFL, but Williams is one of the biggest impact players on defense.
Weaver probably knows Williams strengths as a player as well as anyone having lined up with him in practice for three seasons. He also witnessed how Williams responded to certain coaching styles. Hopefully it helps Weaver in getting the most out of Buffalo’s top pass rusher.
