A week and a half before training camp, Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly says if he had to pick the Bills starting QB for this year, he’d go with the veteran.
Kelly weighed in on the quarterback battle between veteran Kevin Kolb and first round draft pick EJ Manuel Thursday night, in an appearance on The John Murphy Show.
“I’ve been to a couple of practices,” Kelly said. “If I had to give a nod, I really would look more towards Kevin Kolb right now. And the reason I say that is, he’s a veteran. He’s been through it. He knows what to look at.”
“When EJ Manuel, when he gets it, when it starts clicking with him, and the more I saw him, the more people I talk to, it’s starting to click more and more,” Kelly told host John Murphy. “He’s such a great athlete, he’s got such a strong arm, and he’s got such good football sense, which is why they drafted him.”
Kelly says no matter who wins the starting QB job at training camp, the Bills figure to be better off at the position than they have been in recent years.
“Right now, it will be interesting to see how this training camp pans out. Both of them had great minicamps, they both did very good jobs. The whole coaching staff looked at them, and that was one position they might not have to worry about as much as they have in the past.”
Kelly is preparing for a one day youth football clinic at St John Fisher College in Rochester next Tuesday, July 23rd. Information on the clinic is available here.
