It’s been twelve days since Safety Jairus Byrd signed his franchise tender, and more than a week since he rejoined his teammates in Orchard Park.
But the Bills are not sure the Pro Bowl performer will be available when the season kicks off next Sunday. Head Coach Doug Marrone says Byrd is working on a limited basis while he recovers from soreness in his foot.
“He’s still working his way back in,” Marrone said Sunday after practice, “doing a couple of team things, but he’s still working his way back in to get in a position where he can help us.”
Byrd travelled to North Carolina late last week to have his injured foot examined by a specialist.
“Same thing Mario had, it’s called plantar fasciitis,” he told reporters in the locker room Sunday. “It’s just a little foot condition. We’ll see how it goes.”
Byrd was asked how much urgency he feels to be ready to open the season next Sunday against the Patriots.
“As much as my body will allow,” he responded. “I need to be good to go before I step out there. Once my body allows me to be out there and be at 100-percent ready to play, I’ll go.”
