With two rookie signal callers still with a chance to start on Sunday head coach Doug Marrone and the offensive staff in Monday’s practice split the first team reps between EJ Manuel and Jeff Tuel to protect themselves. Both have to be as prepared as possible in the event that they’re the one who plays against New England Sunday. That might be a concern knowing a rookie is going to need all the snaps they can get to prepare for the Patriots defense, but coach Marrone has worked a way around that problem.
“We’re not worried because we’re kind of doubling the reps so we’re not getting shortchanged anywhere as we go,” said Marrone. “And we’ve had extra reps. So we’ll probably have more reps than the first team would ever have during the season.”
Essentially both quarterbacks are each getting enough prep work with the first team offense to be ready for the season opener should they in fact be the starter. Marrone said he intends to make a call on whether Manuel will start on Wednesday.
