One of the reasons former practice squad QB Thad Lewis was elevated to the role of starting quarterback was due in part to his athleticism and the ability to extend plays and scramble should the pocket break down. Lewis is considered a viable read option signal caller and the quarterback told the John Murphy Show that he’s comfortable running it.
“Just an extra added dimension just to make the defense practice for something else,” said Lewis. “I think it’s great and it gives us an extra opportunity to run the football a little more even if I have to use my legs. Whatever is called the quarterback touches the ball every play so you have to be a playmaker and make it work. I think the read option presents some type of trouble to the defense and you can keep them off balance with it so I think it fits well in this offense.”
