Saints QB Drew Brees is more than aware of the success Mario Williams has had as a pass rusher this season. He’s also seen Williams abilities in person more than some might realize. That’s because Williams played for the Texans at a time when Houston and New Orleans would schedule scrimmages against one another during training camp.
“We played against him a lot, practiced against him a lot when he was with the Texans at those training camps and we played against him, that type of thing, but just twice during the season,” said Brees following Wednesday’s practice. “He’s always been a physical presence, but over time you just develop certain skills and techniques and master certain things and I definitely think he’s gotten better as the years have gone on. He’s always had that big physical presence, but he has the tools to go along with it and you see the results.”
A positive sign for Williams is Brees’ sack numbers are a bit higher than usual so far this season. The Saints QB has been taken down 14 times in New Orleans first six games.
