A lot of criticism has been hurled at rookie QB EJ Manuel after a disappointing performance at Tampa Bay this past Sunday. Head coach Doug Marrone did not dispute that Manuel struggled against the Buccaneers, but believes in time his starting quarterback will be a guy who can be relied upon week in and week out.
When asked why he believes in Manuel, Marrone was candid.
“He has the ability to do it, there’s no doubt in my mind,” he said. “The problem like anything else is he’s going to take a lot of the heat because of the position, and that comes with it. We need to make sure that the people around him are doing what they’re supposed to do.
“I think if you sit here and see everything is going well around him and he was the culprit, it would be easy for me to say we’d go ahead and pull him and put another quarterback in there. I don’t have any problem with that.
“He is working his way through it and we need help from everyone else around him to make sure everyone else does their job. There are times when things break down and it’s not necessarily his fault. Whether it’s a route, a long route, a missed assignment up front, not winning a physical battle somewhere along the line, I think all those things factor into his play.
“He’s got to go to work, get himself prepared and get ready to go with coach Hackett.”
