Chase for 2013 INT title won’t hit Bills best

Posted by Chris Brown on December 14, 2013 – 5:41 pm

As we profiled on Buffalobills.com this week the Bills are in the hunt for the league’s interception title. With three games to play they’ve got 18, which is three behind league leader Tampa Bay (21). Even if they overtake the Bucs and lead the league in picks, they won’t even come close to the best interception season in team history.

That distinction belongs to the 1962 Bills, who had 36 interceptions and did it in just 14 games.

The only Bills season in the top 10 after 1980 is the 2009 campaign when Buffalo tallied 28 interceptions. Jairus Byrd tied for the league lead that year with nine INTs and went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie.

Buffalo has a slight chance of catching the 2004 club, which ranks in a tie for 10th in team history with 24.

Here are the Bills’ top 10 interceptions.

1 – 1962 – 36 INTs (14 games)
2 – 1960 – 33 INTs (14 games)
3 – 1965 – 32 INTs (14 games)
T-4 – 1966 – 29 INTs (14 games)
T-4 – 1961 – 29 INTs (14 games)
T-6 – 2009 – 28 INTs (16 games)
T-6 – 1964 – 28 INTs (14 games)
8 – 1967 – 27 INTs (14 games)
9 – 1975 – 25 INTs (14 games)
T-10 – 1979 – 24 INTs (16 games)
T-10 – 2004 – 24 INTs (16 games)
T-10 – 1980 – 24 INTs (16 games)
