As we will profile on Buffalobills.com Friday morning, Scott Chandler is scheduled to become a free agent this offseason. He led the team in receptions (53) and receiving yards (655) due in part to the fact that he stayed healthy all season, while other receiving targets missed games with injuries. When head coach Doug Marrone was asked for his take on the talent at the tight end position he sounded very encouraged about what the future holds for the Bills there.
“I feel we’ve gotten good production,” Marrone said. “I think that Scott Chandler had a fine year. He really did. I think that we have players in place here, on this roster, which can be very productive. And obviously in my background offensively and Nathaniel’s (Hackett) background, that position has been productive for us in the past. And I think it’s important (to make use of) the different ways you can attack people schematically, obviously the tight end in zone coverages down the middle of the field, but more importantly again with the matchups.
“Right now we have three, I believe players on our team right now under contract, and obviously with Scott, and Doug (Whaley) talked about Scott, but I feel that we have four tight ends that are potentially very productive.”
The tight ends under contract are Chris Gragg, Tony Moeaki and Lee Smith. Mike Caussin, who was on I-R is a restricted free agent and Chandler is scheduled to be unrestricted.
