While the Bills as an organization are happy for the opportunity Mike Pettine finds himself in as a head coaching candidate for the Cleveland Browns, it also puts Buffalo in somewhat of a holding pattern on certain things. The operation of a coaching staff is extremely structured even in the offseason, but when one organization is forced to work on the timetable of another it’s anything but easy.
In an appearance on the John Murphy show last night, Bills head coach Doug Marrone admitted that while happy for Pettine, the process of Cleveland’s search leaves them in a tricky spot.
“It does and partly because of the rules of the league,” Marrone said. “You cannot deny anyone permission to speak to anyone that would like to be a head coach. Not that we would, but you can’t put a timetable on them. You can’t say, ‘Hey listen you can talk to our guy, but you only have a certain amount of time.’ So really the ball is in their court.”
The pace of the Browns coaching search is expected to quicken with Super Bowl assistants available this week.
