While a good number of Bills fans are ticked that the Cleveland Browns hired Mike Pettine away from Buffalo there’s an interesting note to make about how teams fare after they lose a good coordinator when looking at this year’s two Super Bowl participants.
The Denver Broncos lost their offensive coordinator Mike McCoy last year, who was named the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. In 2013, the first year with a new coordinator they finished number one in the league in total offense. Similiarly the Seattle Seahawks, the NFC rep for the Super Bowl this year, lost their defensive coordinator last offseason in Gus Bradley, who was named the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. And the Seahawks finished number one in total defense in 2013.
Granted, both units already had a lot of things going for them in terms of talent, but having been a top 10 defense in 2013, there’s no reason to believe there should be a drop off for Buffalo’s defense, especially knowing that the majority of the players in that defense are under contract and will be back for 2014.
