Browns QB priority helps Bills

Posted by Chris Brown on February 22, 2014 – 11:53 am

As we profiled on Buffalobills.com today, a handful of teams drafting ahead of the Bills are quarterback needy. That could push the top talent at other positions down to Buffalo at nine. Saturday morning at the Combine, Browns head coach Mike Pettine confirmed that QB is a priority position for them and they pick fourth overall.

“You’re always looking to make the team better and that’s the most important position,” said Pettine. “So we’re
going to do a lengthy evaluation on what’s available in the draft, what’s available in free agency, what’s on campus, and make that decision for what’s going to give us the best chance to win.”

Pettine also admitted he’s going to lean on his offensive assistants in the quarterback evaluation.

“We’re looking for one that’s going to maximize our ability to win. Even though the quarterback’s a priority, we don’t want to put ourselves in a position where the quarterback has to win the game. I think that’s where some teams make mistakes. Even though it’s the most important position. If you don’t have that guy that you feel, whether it’s Brady or Manning that can take over a game and win it for you.

“The Seahawks’ model, they proved it. If you surround him with a great defense and a great running game and you protect him and teach your team how to not lose games first ad then to win them second, I think there’s a lot of different ways to win in the NFL. While the quarterback is a priority, we need to make sure we’re solid around
him and make his job easier.”
