Though Andre Reed was the star of the show this weekend as he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, his quarterback and fellow Hall of Famer Jim Kelly provided many emotional highlights.
“Twelve plus 83 always equals 6” entered the American lexicon as Reed gave his induction speech, calling Kelly the toughest guy he’s ever known before catching a pass from him on stage.
Coinciding with Kelly’s participation in Hall of Fame weekend, ESPN and NBC aired behind-the-scenes stories on Kelly’s fight with cancer.
ESPN’s edition of Outside the Lines this morning focused on the “Kelly Tough” mentality. From the get-go, it’s a tearjerker: “My name is Jim Kelly. I’m a husband, a father, a Hall of Fame quarterback, and I have cancer.” Watch here.
During halftime of the Bills vs. Giants Hall of Fame game on NBC, at which Kelly participated in the coin toss, a similarly emotional story was aired touching on Kelly’s youth football camp and lifelong fight for awareness of Krabbe Disease through his Hunter’s Hope Foundation. Watch here.
