Belichick: Tyrod is no rookie

Tyrod Taylor may have been making his first NFL start last week as the starting QB for the Bills, but as far as Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is concerned don’t think Taylor’s inexperience puts him on par with a first-year player.

“[Tyrod] Taylor is no rookie. This guy has been in the league for five years,” said Belichick. “He was a good player when he had an opportunity to play in Baltimore. It’s kind of different, but in some ways kind of reminds me of the [Matt] Cassel situation when Matt went to Kansas City. He played here for a year, but Taylor never got to play very much in Baltimore, but I’m just saying guys that are in those roles and then they get an opportunity to play and everybody finds out they’re pretty good, but the guy in front of them is pretty good, too. That’s one of the benefits of free agency – the opportunity for players like that to go somewhere where the road is a little clearer.”
Taylor used free agency to find a better opportunity to start believing that being part of a three-man competition in Buffalo would be a better avenue to take to get on the field. And he was right. While waiting for a shot at a starting job, Taylor used Tom Brady’s rise from sixth-round pick to stardom as motivation.
