He obviously felt awful about how his fumble on a punt return led to three valuable points for New England in Buffalo’s 20-13 loss to the Patriots. But Leodis McKelvin addressed the media in Buffalo’s locker room postgame.
“We made mistakes,” said McKelvin. “We have to make sure we stay on top of keys and communication and everything will work out fine. We had mishaps and we had things that go against and they capitalized off of those mistakes.”
McKelvin wasn’t impressed with the team’s defensive effort believing they didn’t come up big in a couple of big spots in the game.
“Four out of 14 on third down (conversions allowed is nice), but we’re talking about crucial situations,” he said. “Talking about getting to third down and then having a holding penalty, or getting to third down and having a communication breakdown. The goal was to have no letdowns on the defensive side. Special teams missed field goal and a fumble. Those things will hurt you.”
When asked specifically about his fumble and how that also happened back in 2009 on a kick return, McKelvin was matter of fact.
“That’s football,” he said. “Things happen and I guess it just happens to me in this place. Luck of the draw, but either or, like I said we’re going to come out here and get ready to play as a team and get this next victory in Kansas City.”
