For weeks he’s assured that his foot is healed, but pushing himself to the limit on the field is something he didn’t do until yesterday (Sunday). The good news is he came back and did the same thing Monday at practice.
“Yeah that’s what I’m doing every day. I’m trying to get faster and faster at the things that were kind of in my head with the injury. But every day, I’m speeding up. I’d say today I was going 100 percent. The other day, 100 percent. I knocked two days out and my foot felt fine,” Watkins said. “Still got to get in the cold tub but its right where it need to be.”
Head coach Rex Ryan said Watkins preseason game time is over. After just two series at Washington, Watkins won’t see the field again in uniform until Week 1 in Baltimore. But Watkins believes he’s ready. There’s just one thing he’s trying to capture on the field to be completely prepared.
“Just trying to get that timing with Tyrod,” he said. “And mentally just trying to get in game shape and game speed. Those two series didn’t do enough for me so trying to get it done this week, more so the next week. And I’m just trying to work. I’m trying to get back in the groove of things.”
When asked if he’d be ready to play if there was a regular season game on Sunday, Watkins answered in the affirmative.
“Yeah, I’d score a couple touchdowns,” said Watkins chuckling. “I’d be prepared.”
Watkins said right now he’s keeping his routes smooth, but come the regular season he’ll be making them “jerkier” and more difficult for DBs to mirror.
