The Bills quest for an AFC playoff berth will be battle that requires help from other sources as they do not control their own destiny. They’ll also have to overcome a trend that’s working against their current numbers when it comes to point differential.

Buffalo currently has a point differential this season of minus-50 with 240 points scored and 290 against. Only five times in league history has a team with a point differential of minus-50 or more reached the postseason.

Those teams are listed below. The most recent were the 2011 Denver Broncos, who were a stunning minus-80 in point differential and reached the postseason with an 8-8 record.

Season Team Record Point Diff.
2011 Denver 8–8 -81
2010 Seattle 7–9 -97
2004 St. Louis 8–8 -73
1998 Arizona 9–7 -53
1989 Pittsburgh 9–7 -61
