PHOTO OF THE DAY

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller took part in a photo shoot and video for this year’s season ticket commercial which aired during last night’s draft special. This year’s slogan: The 2013 Buffalo Bills are recharged. That makes this more than a new season – it’s the start of a new era of Bills football. There’s a new energy, new leadership and a renewed commitment to excellence. The recharged commercial can be viewed here >>>.
QUOTES OF THE DAY
On the passing of Buffalo News Columnist Larry Felser:
“I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Larry Felser. Larry was there at the beginning of the American Football League and along with fellow reporters such as Will McDonough and others, played an important role in the growth of our league. He was the consummate professional—tough, but fair, and never one to shy away from clearly stating his opinion. I had tremendous respect for Larry and we developed a deep friendship that lasted throughout our lifetimes. We shared some great laughs over the years and that’s what I am remembering most today about Larry. I will truly miss him. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to his lovely wife, Beverly, and their family.” – Bills Owner Ralph Wilson, Jr.
On the fine-tuning process of the draft board and preparing for the eighth overall pick:
“What we’ll do is take the total body of work. The resume from this guy from when we started this process last May, through the fall, through the all-star games and the combine, through the spring information from pro days and visits, and say, ‘From everything you’ve seen, how do you feel about this guy?’ That’s when we fine tune it, and that’s when we put a final grade on a guy. Everybody always asks me, is it hectic on draft day? And the answer is no. We’re well prepared and we have the board set for our top eight players. As the players get called, we start taking them off our board, and then it becomes our pick. Usually, about one pick before us, we start looking at who’s up there. And there are usually those two or three guys that we thought were the best eight players up there. That’s when the discussion goes, which player out of these two or three guys will we go for.” – Bills Assistant General Manager Doug Whaley via The John Murphy Show (4/24)

QUOTE OF THE DAY
On what his mindset has been this offseason:
“Doug Whaley sent me a challenge. He said when he was in Pittsburgh they drafted a guy in the third round named Mike Wallace. As a speed guy he has been…he is not a very small speed guy. He is of long stature, very similar to myself. He told me to kind of compare ourselves and figure out what our differences were. I kind of took that to heart saying, ‘I have wanted to be that type of player and more.’ So I figured it out and I am trying to improve on it to get to where he is.” – Bills WR T.J. Graham via The John Murphy Show on 4/23

QUOTES OF THE DAY FROM YESTERDAY’S VOLUNTARY MINI-CAMP
On the high amount of energy and excitement at practice:
“I think that is how we feel. I am pumped up and I am excited. I feel like the players. I feel like if I walk off this field and I am not exhausted and I am not tired, you know what, I did not give them the service that they deserve. That they have earned. I said it to the players earlier on in the week, it is a privilege for myself, and I am sure the staff feels the same way, to be on the field with them.” – Head Coach Doug Marrone
On being very vocal and expressive:
“I think it goes back to the way I was brought up and a lot of us…in other words, it was always when you hit that grass or now that turf you are running. That is how I was brought up from a very young level and I believe that. I think that it is a mentality of when you step on the field, you are running and you are playing.” – Head Coach Doug Marrone
On noticing a different pace at practice:
“The guys just get very competitive out there. We do not want to lose. They do not want to lose. We’re just trying to make each other better. There was definitely a lot of energy today than what it has been the last couple of days.” – RB C.J. Spiller
On being excited about playing in a multiple front defense:
“Definitely. I have had a chance to play I guess you would say a hybrid 4-3, 3-4 before. This is similar with the possibilities. I know the possibilities that are there. You have somebody that can schematically scheme up something to create edges and create wide open guys. The one thing I have not done before is play this many positions. I am ready for it. It is just going to be very exciting and us as players are very excited. Every day when we come in it is an upbeat tempo. You have to be. The atmosphere is completely changed here.” – DE Mario Williams

April 18, 1968 – BILLS SIGN BOB KALSU
The Buffalo Bills agreed to terms with Oklahoma G Bob Kalsu – the team’s eighth-round draft selection.
PHOTO OF THE DAY

Bob Kalsu started eight games at guard in 1968 and was voted the team’s top rookie. He began fulfilling his ROTC obligation with the United States Army following the 1968 season and started his tour of duty in Vietnam in November 1969. He was killed by mortar fire on July 21, 1970 while defending Ripcord Base on an isolated jungle mountaintop near Vietnam’s Ashua Valley. He is the only professional football player killed in Vietnam. Kalsu was selected to the Wall of Fame on what would have been his 55th birthday, April 13, 2000.
QUOTES OF THE DAY FROM YESTERDAY’S VOLUNTARY MINI-CAMP
His thoughts on the wide receiving corps:
“I feel good about it. I really feel good about T.J. Graham. I have been watching him since he got here, but these past couple days he looks like a kid with something on his mind. Like as if he is trying to take over the team or take over this receiving corps. It is going to be fun competing with him and the rest of the guys in the room.” – WR Stevie Johnson
On the tempo of the offense during mini-camp:
“We are not even pushing it right now really and you can still feel it amongst the practice. We have been finishing early (due to the tempo), both days. It has a lot to do with our coaching and the way that they press things. And then of course it transpires through me and the leaders. That is the way we want to play the game.” – QB Kevin Kolb
On his opportunity this year:
“It feels good not just looking at cards, guys just running everywhere and not really knowing what is going on. It is more detailed when you are running your own stuff. It is a whole lot better. You kind of know where guys are going to be at. It is a lot better than doing the scout team stuff.” – QB Tarvaris Jackson

The Buffalo Bills hosted their 2013 pre-draft media luncheon yesterday. Bills General Manager Buddy Nix (center) will oversee his fourth Draft with the Bills. Left to Right: Coordinator of College Scouting Doug Majeski, Assistant General Manager Doug Whaley, Nix, Director of College Scouting Chuck Cook and Director of Pro Personnel Tom Gibbons took part in the press conference.
QUOTES OF THE DAY FROM YESTERDAY’S PRE-DRAFT LUNCHEON
“On behalf of Mr. Wilson and everyone in the Buffalo Bills organization, a lot of our focus and concentration has been in the draft room over the past few weeks but our hearts are certainly with the victims and the families in Boston and in the New England region for this senseless tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families. Once again it’s a credit to the American spirit when you see the first responders, the police and the fire officials who have stepped up throughout the region, throughout the country to help those victims.” –President and CEO Russ Brandon
On if there is there a quarterback good enough to be picked at the eighth spot:
“You know I think there is. Also, I’ve said from Day One, this quarterback class is better than everybody thinks it is. It’s better than the publicity that they get. And by that I mean there’s about five or six of those guys, maybe seven, that do a lot of things good and do them good enough to win.” – General Manager Buddy Nix
On if losing offensive linemen Andy Levitre and Chad Rinehart impacts the team’s needs during the draft:
“Not at all. Now having said that, I know a lot of people are saying we’re taking a guard, one of those top two guards. Our roster, in house, is better than I think we give credit for, especially offensive line. We’re pretty deep there. We have six guards. We think a couple of those guys can play. Having said all that before you just write that we’re not going to take a guard at number eight, it’s hard to pass up two players like the boys in Alabama and the one at North Carolina. Both of them are great players. We’d have to give that a lot of thought.” - General Manager Buddy Nix
On what type of player the coaching staff has asked the personnel department to look for:
“The number one thing they stressed to us is they want players to play like Bills, which are tough, competitive, intelligent players that love football. This helps us out a lot and basically told us all get the best player that one plays like a Bill, but is the best player at the position and we will find a way to make this player successful.” – Assistant General Manager Doug Whaley

On how the offseason workouts have gone so far:
“I think it has gone good. Obviously, we do not get to watch (the players). Our coaches get to meet with them. Turnout has been good. The enthusiasm—I think the building is upbeat having them back. One of the reasons we stay in this thing is being around those players and watching them improve. The Buffalo Bills hosted the Western New York Girls in Sports Clinic for over 200 girls ages 9-12 on Saturday. Founded in 2004 by Mary Wilson, wife of Ralph Wilson, the WNY Girls in Sports program’s goal is to empower, educate and motivate young girls through sports participation, learning life skills, sportsmanship, and awareness of Title IX and its history. The WNY Girls in Sports Clinic is hosted in partnership with the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, Buffalo Public Schools and the Girl Scout Council of WNY.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
On the importance of the Western New York Girls in Sports program:
“It’s become more than I ever expected. For many of the girls, it’s their first time attending, many of them could have come a total of eight times. I’m hoping that even a little bit makes an impact. Sports impact your whole life. Learning how to work together… there are a lot of times you’re going to lose in life and you need to be able to move forward from there. There’s no doubt that for me sports has given me more than I have given it, and this is my way to pay it back.” – Mary Wilson, wife of Bills owner Ralph Wilson and founder of the Western New York Girls in Sports program

QB Kevin Kolb meets with the media yesterday afternoon at One Bills Drive after officially signing his contract with the team.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
QB Kevin Kolb
On what attracted him to coming to Buffalo:
“The first (thing) was the offense and the coaching staff. Just the time I got to spend with them and Russ Brandon, our President, to see where the future of the team is going. Buddy Nix, there was just a lot of good rapport there the first couple of hours we spent together… When you have been through meetings before and you sit down with these guys, you can tell when you have the same visions and the same hopes. I thought that we all felt that way when we left the meeting. I went home and slept on it for a couple of days. They flew me up here and had the same feeling while I was here… At this point in my career, where I have been and what I have done—for me I just want to win and this gives me the best opportunity to do that with this team.”

“We wanted to add some veteran experience to the quarterback position on our roster and we think we’ve added a good one by signing Kevin. He’s a player we had targeted since he became a free agent and he should be a strong candidate in the competition for the starting quarterback position.”

April 5, 1974 – BILLS INTRODUCE NEW LOGO
The Bills announced a major change in the team’s logo for the 1974 season. Gone was the red standing buffalo that had been the team’s mark since 1962. It was replaced by a blue charging buffalo with a red streak.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
DT Marcell Dareus
Q: How do you think a 3-4 defense fits you?
A: “I love it. I like how (Coach Pettine) is going to come in and mix it up a little bit for us. We are going to play multiple fronts. We are not just zeroing in on one thing. I think it is a great new look for the Bills. Have got a great new system that I think they are implementing. I really cannot wait to get on in it.”

QUOTES OF THE DAY
DE Mario Williams
Q: What is your first impression of HC Doug Marrone?
A: “My first impression is expectation. I think he is definitely an advocate of changing the tempo and the whole demeanor of how things have been here the last however many years. Just trying to get us upbeat and focused on expecting to do better. More accountability.”
DT Alan Branch
Q: What were the factors that convinced you to sign with Buffalo?
A: “The thing that got me is they say it is a lot like Michigan. It kind of is, kind of similar to Ann Arbor, more like kind of a college town. Buffalo, they love their football here. It is going to be crazy and wild in the stands. Just the opportunity to play with this defense and the scheme that they are planning on putting in is pretty exciting as well.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY
RB Tashard Choice
On earning his spot and establishing his role on the Bills roster:
“You have to work. First thing is always how you work, how you compete in practice and also how you do in games. The guys in the locker room, we have a lot of great guys and a lot of great talent in the locker room. They respect people that come in and work. They know why I am there. They know I will try to get guys to stay on track for what we want to do—which is to win. We want to win, have fun with each other and be cool with all our teammates. That is what I do. I like that. I have good camaraderie with all of my teammates and I am all about football. I am not one of those guys that just likes the lifestyle of doing things. I am all about football and winning. I am coming back just to do that. Just to help the guys out and be the best I can be.” – via The John Murphy Show 3/29/13

QUOTE OF THE DAY
WR Stevie Johnson
Q: You have a new receiver’s coach (Ike Hilliard) who has played in the NFL. Do you know much about him or does it matter to you having a position coach who has played the position in the league?
A: “As far as having a coach who did or did not play, I am not biased towards any of that. My coach is my coach. No matter if he was that first round pick or he never played a down in his life—he is still my coach and I have the respect (for him). With Ike Hilliard being our coach, I think it is pretty cool. I have seen him play. I know he has “got game.” That is one thing I guess I can take from it. I know my coach has made these moves, so when he tells me something I may be more on board to try them out because I know that he has done it before. It is a pretty cool thing.” -via The John Murphy Show 3/27/13
