Last season the Bills led the league in games where they were facing opponents coming off extra rest (10 days or full bye) with six of their 16 games providing such situations in 2013. Three of those games came against division opponents. The 2014 schedule is considerably more friendly when it comes to that factor for Buffalo, but again a certain division opponent will have the extra rest edge against the Bills this fall.
Buffalo has only two games this season in which their opponent is coming off of extra rest. Unfortunately those two games are again division contests with both coming against the New York Jets, though one of those has been neutralized to an extent.
In Week 8 Buffalo plays at MetLife Stadium against New York and the Jets will be coming off 10 days of rest. That’s because they’ll be playing New England on Thursday night (Oct. 16) the week before.
Then in the rematch between the Bills and Jets in Buffalo in Week 12, the Jets will be coming off their Week 11 bye. Now the league did a good job of mitigating that advantage because the Bills will be playing on the previous Thursday in Week 11, so they’ll get 10 days rest essentially making that matchup a wash.
Still, it’s tough to ignore this is the third time in four years that the Jets will come off extra rest in both of their division matchups with Buffalo.
In 2013 the Jets had a 10-day break prior to their Week 3 matchup with the Bills at MetLife Stadium as they were scheduled to play Thursday night in Week 2. The Jets also came off of their bye week to play the Bills in Week 11. Buffalo split their season series with New York last season with both games having lopsided outcomes won by the home team.
In 2011 the Jets had the extra rest benefit before playing Buffalo. New York was coming off a bye in Week 8 to play the Bills in Buffalo in Week 9. Then in Week 12 when the Jets hosted the Bills they were coming off 10 days rest having played on Thursday night in Week 11 against Denver.
Though it is a bit frustrating that the Jets seem to get some kind of edge of late when facing the Bills in terms of scheduling, it’s hard to have an issue with the NFL’s job with Buffalo’s overall schedule, especially knowing that the Bills off their bye week will face Kansas City and then play Green Bay on six days rest in Week 15 since they’re playing the previous Monday night against Atlanta.
It’s as even a slate as the Bills have seen when it comes to extra rest balance.

Every year the NFL’s regular season schedule is released around mid-April, but in recent years there have been delays at times. According to NFL Senior VP of Communications Greg Aiello the release of the schedule is expected to be on time this spring.
In an interview with ProFootballTalk Aiello confirmed the league is aiming for the “normal target” of mid-April.
That means Bills fans have only a couple of weeks to submit their entries for the Bills Schedule Challenge, powered by the New York Lottery, where if you correctly guess the order of Buffalo’s opponents for the 2014 season you could win Bills season tickets for life!
