Gaines, Johnson, Matthews all listed questionable

Posted by Chris Brown on October 20, 2017 – 3:08 pm

The Bills will not have TE Charles Clay or LB Ramon Humber, but they’re expected to have two of their top three cornerbacks back in their defensive lineup. And there appears to be a good chance they’ll have WR Jordan Matthews back as well.

Although cornerbacks E.J. Gaines and Leonard Johnson and WR Jordan Matthews are all listed as questionable all three participated fully in practice on Friday.

For Matthews it was his first day of full participation after he was limited on Wednesday and Thursday in his return from thumb surgery. For Gaines and Johnson it was their second consecutive day practicing fully all but assuring they’ll both assume their normal coverage duties Sunday against Tampa Bay.

OT Cordy Glenn will have the opportunity to start on Sunday after a full week of practice for the first time in a long time. Head coach Sean McDermott said the staff will determine if Glenn starts and whether he rotates in and out with rookie Dion Dawkins on Saturday.

Bills WR Jordan Matthews was again at practice catching passes on Thursday, but did not practice on a full-time basis. For the second straight day he was limited.

Not practicing was Richie Incognito as he was on a veteran rest day.

The encouraging news was cornerbacks E.J. Gaines and Leonard Johnson were both full participants in practice after being limited on Wednesday. Cordy Glenn was also a full-time participant for a second consecutive day.

“I’m encouraged with where I’m at,” Glenn told Buffalobills.com. “I was here during the bye week getting extra work in and the strength and conditioning staff has done a good job of having me as close to game shape as possible.”

Bills CB E.J. Gaines and Leonard Johnson were both back on the practice field Wednesday.

Both players benefited from the bye week. The two cornerbacks were limited in Wednesday’s practice session. But Johnson said he felt good.

“It’s actually scary how fast the body can almost heal itself with the proper diet and our medical team doing a great job with rehabbing me and keeping me uplifted and in tune with everything in regards to my movements on the field and in the pool,” said Johnson after Wednesday’s practice. “So I feel pretty good. I feel really good actually.”

So too was WR Jordan Matthews, who caught passes for the first time since thumb surgery two weeks ago.

OT Cordy Glenn practiced fully. Here’s the full injury report.

Glenn out for Sunday, Lawson questionable

Posted by Chris Brown on September 29, 2017 – 1:32 pm

It was widely anticipated that Bills OT Cordy Glenn would not be able to play this Sunday after failing to practice all week. That was confirmed Friday with the release of the team’s injury report.

Tyrod Taylor’s blind side protector was listed as out for Sunday’s game against the Falcons. That means that rookie OT Dion Dawkins will make his second straight start on Sunday in Atlanta.

Meanwhile the situation is more up in the air on DE Shaq Lawson. Lawson, who sustained a groin injury in practice Thursday, did not practice on Friday and head coach Sean McDermott indicated that he’s likely to be a game time decision.

If he can’t go Eddie Yarbrough is expected to start with Ryan Davis rotating in at left defensive end.

Groin injury adds Lawson to injury report

Posted by Chris Brown on September 28, 2017 – 2:53 pm

Shaq Lawson was added to the Bills injury report Thursday with a groin injury. Lawson told Buffalobills.com that it’s been sore more than anything else, but he was pulled from practice early on Thursday to avoid making things worse.

“It’s just been sore,” Lawson said. “I think I’ll be alright.”

Lawson, who has a sack in each of his last two games against NFC opponents, is looking to make it three in a row on Sunday against Atlanta. His likelihood of playing against the Falcons will be listed in the team’s Friday injury report.

In the meantime here is where things stand following Thursday’s practice, with Marcell Dareus a full practice participant.

Dareus held out of practice, Glenn returns

Posted by Chris Brown on September 21, 2017 – 3:11 pm

Head coach Sean McDermott expressed concern about Marcell Dareus’ availability for Sunday’s game after suffering an ankle injury last weekned. Dareus missed a second straight day of practice on Thursday.

The only other player who did not participate in practice Thursday was DT Jerel Worthy, who remains in the concussion protocol.

The good news is Cordy Glenn returned to practice from an ankle injury suffered in last week’s game. Glenn was limited. The key will be how he feels Friday morning and whether he can practice a second straight day.

Shaq Lawson also returned to practice from a nerve contusion in his foot, but was limited.

WR Kaelin Clay was added to the injury report as a limited participant Thursday as he had to step out of practice with a foot injury. TE Nick O’Leary was another new addition with a hamstring injury and was limited.

Worthy out, Johnson ques. for Sunday

Posted by Chris Brown on September 15, 2017 – 2:05 pm

BBSP_6162_Injury-Report-by-UBMD---Excel-Header

The Bills had a couple of nicked up players coming out of last week’s game, but it looks like they’re not in any danger of missing any starters Sunday at Carolina.

DL Jerel Worthy remains in the concussion protocol and is out this week. Meanwhile CB Leonard Johnson is listed as questionable with a quad injury. Johnson was limited for a second straight day in practice Friday, but head coach Sean McDermott sounded confident that he’d have his nickel corner on Sunday.

“Just a little bit of a quad,” said McDermott of Johnson. “Limited him a little bit yesterday, but nothing to be concerned about.”

Buffalo has just four cornerbacks on their active roster, so if his status was in doubt the Bills would likely make a roster move before 4 pm on Saturday. They do have CB Greg Mabin on their practice squad.

OT Cordy Glenn (foot) and CB EJ Gaines (shoulder) were full participants in practice for a second straight day on Friday and are expected to start.

LB Tanner Vallejo (knee) and S Colt Anderson (foot) are also coming back from preseason injuries and practiced fully on Friday as they appear a step closer to returning to action.

Gaines practices fully, Johnson has quad injury

Posted by Chris Brown on September 14, 2017 – 3:34 pm

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said on Wednesday that he expected CB EJ Gaines to be fit to start on Sunday at Carolina, despite sustaining a shoulder contusion in Week 1 that forced him from the game. That contention was reinforced by Gaines’ full participation in practice on Thursday, but another cornerback was added to the injury report.

Gaines was just a limited participant in Wednesday’s practice. Coming back and practicing fully Thursday is a great sign.

“I’m feeling good,” said Gaines. “As far as Sunday that’s kind of up to the coaches based on how I look out there, but yeah I felt good and I’m feeling better every day.”

While the Gaines news was good, fellow CB Leonard Johnson was added to the injury report Thursday with a quad injury. He was limited in practice Thursday.

Clay, Glenn among the limited in practice

Posted by Chris Brown on September 13, 2017 – 3:56 pm

BBSP_6162_Injury-Report-by-UBMD---Excel-Header

DT Jerel Worthy was the only non-participant at practice Wednesday as he remains in the concussion protocol, but there were a few unanticipated limited players in practice.

The notables were TE Charles Clay with a shoulder injury and OT Cordy Glenn with his foot.

Head coach Sean McDermott was encouraged that Glenn had come out of the Week 1 game clean with his foot no worse for the wear despite getting 56 snaps.

“At this point it seems like we took a step forward,” said McDermott of Glenn. “Cordy did some good things in the game, obviously didn’t the play the entire game but his rep count certainly increased from the week before. We want to keep trending upward in respect to Cordy.”

CB EJ Gaines and LB Tanner Vallejo were also limited. Gaines is coming back from a shoulder contusion, but is expected to start Sunday. Vallejo returned to practice for the first time since getting his knee scoped a few weeks ago.

RB LeSean McCoy (wrist) and FB Mike Tolbert (knee) were both full practice participants.

Posted by Chris Brown on September 8, 2017 – 3:20 pm

Buffalo’s Week 1 injury report is a short one, and that’s a good thing.

LB Tanner Vallejo (knee) and DT Jerel Worthy (concussion) are the only players who appear on the report.

DL Cedric Thornton is expected to fill Worthy’s role as a rotational defensive tackle on Sunday.
