Brandon Burton

The Bills have released CB Brandon Burton.

Burton’s release gives Buffalo an open roster spot should they need to call up a running back from the practice squad.

Head coach Doug Marrone alluded to that possibility this morning on WGR radio should C.J. Spiller be unable to go. Ronnie Wingo is the practice squad running back.

CB Smith active today

Posted by Chris Brown on October 13, 2013 – 11:58 am

QB Thad Lewis isn’t the only Bills player who was on the practice squad Monday and now active for Buffalo today to face the Bengals.

CB Brandon Smith was also called up from Buffalo’s practice squad this week and is active for today’s game.

Head coach Doug Marrone expressed an interest in seeing what Smith had to offer especially on special teams.

The converted receiver (6’2″ 195) is a good size, speed athlete so he should help on kick and punt coverage.

CB Burton seeing reps

Posted by Chris Brown on October 1, 2013 – 4:09 pm

Cornerback Brandon Burton is getting reps in the secondary.

Aaron Williams is a bit limited with his low back contusion so Burton, who saw action at corner last week, is lined up at corner again this week.

CBs Burton, Adams likely to see action Sunday

Posted by Chris Brown on September 23, 2013 – 3:22 pm

Reserve cornerbacks Brandon Burton and Johnny Adams have not seen much of the field on defense this season. Even after the loss of Leodis McKelvin to a hamstring injury, Buffalo shuffled the secondary instead of putting Burton or Adams on the field. Head coach Doug Marrone indicated Burton and Adams could see playing time this Sunday against Baltimore if all goes well during the practice week.

“This week we’re going to find out,” said Marrone Monday. “We’re going to put them out there. We’re going to take a look at it. We definitely feel comfortable about being able to put them out there. When you get out there and you start practicing and the bullets are flying we’ll see how they perform in those situations.

“If they perform well then that’s great for us and it gives us a great opportunity. And that’s what we’re expecting and looking forward to.”

Burton has appeared in 17 NFL games in his career, but has been mostly a special teams player in his three NFL seasons. Adams is an undrafted rookie, who has seen a total of 23 snaps on special teams for the Bills the past two games.

Marrone usually fills position holes in house

Posted by Chris Brown on September 9, 2013 – 3:09 pm

Bills head coach Doug Marrone was asked if they’d be making a roster move to sign another free agent cornerback with Ron Brooks out indefinitely with a broken foot that requires surgery. Marrone laid out his philosophy when it comes to filling holes on their roster at a specific position.

“I believe if you have players on your practice squad you bring them up and then you go out and find players for your practice squad,” said Marrone. “Unless you don’t have those players in the building then you go out and look for them. When you lose players for an amount of time you have to have a little vision to see who the teams are that are coming up to see if you’re going to need more players at that position and make that decision.”

Buffalo has Brandon Burton, who they just signed last week, as well as rookie CB Johnny Adams on the practice squad. Marrone said he’ll meet with his coordinators to determine a course of action.

The challenge for new CB Burton

Posted by Chris Brown on September 3, 2013 – 11:54 am

While there’s little debate that the style of Mike Pettine’s defensive scheme plays well to newly signed CB Brandon Burton’s strengths, he has the challenge of learning a defensive scheme at a time when the team is going to be more focused on game planning and narrowing the playbook for specific opponents each Sunday.

That leaves Burton with the challenge of carving extra time out of his weekly schedule to work on mastering the foundation of Buffalo’s defense to have himself ready to play sooner rather than later.

“Right now they’re game planning so they’re playing different defenses within the base defenses,” Burton told Buffalobills.com. “I still haven’t learned the base defenses and everything so I still have to get down the base stuff and the different techniques, the basics. I’m just trying to learn that right now and I know as time goes the specifics within the defense will come for me.”

Still two unfilled roster spots

Posted by johnmurphyshow on September 1, 2013 – 10:30 pm

The addition of CB Brandon Burton to the Bills 53-man roster Sunday brings the team’s total active roster to 51. That means there are two spots left to be filled.

Burton was claimed off waivers after his release from the Minnesota Vikings Saturday.

Head Coach Doug Marrone indicated after the Sunday practice that his roster is in a state of flux, and more changes might be coming.

“We’re in constant transition or constant motion going forward, trying to put together the best team we can,” Marrone told reporters.

“We’re always looking to upgrade this team, no matter what position it is. I think you’ll see that going through the season week to week.”

“If there’s someone out there we feel can better this football team, then we’ll have to look at what those moves can be,” he said. “I think that’s our responsibility as an organization to our fans. And it’s our responsibility to our coaches to our team.”
