DE Enemkpali added to 53; RB Wood to I-R

Posted by Chris Brown on October 12, 2015 – 1:24 pm

After serving his four-game league-imposed suspension the Bills added DE IK Enemkpali to their 53-man roster Monday. Enemkpali had been on the Reserve/Suspended list for the first four weeks of the season and then had a one week roster exemption this past week.

The defensive end was originally signed by Buffalo after his release by the Jets this past August. Enemkpali had been involved in a locker room altercation with Jets QB Geno Smith in which Smith sustained a broken jaw.

In four preseason game appearances for Buffalo, Enemkpali posted 11 tackles. He’s expected to serve as a rotational end to help keep starters Mario Williams and Jerry Hughes fresh and might have a role on special teams.

“I think he’ll fill in as a backup defensive end, and possibly contribute on special teams,” said head coach Rex Ryan. “He can be a backup pass rusher in sub(packages).”

To make room on the roster for Enemkpali the Bills placed RB Cierre Wood on injured reserve. Wood sustained an ACL knee injury in Sunday’s win at Tennessee and had to be carted to the locker room.

Whaley: Karlos Williams sustained concussion

Posted by Chris Brown on October 6, 2015 – 8:37 am

It wasn’t fully recognized by even Karlos Williams himself, but late Sunday night the Bills running back wasn’t feeling well. After an examination on Sunday evening and then again Monday it was discovered that Williams sustained a concussion in the Bills loss to the Giants Sunday. GM Doug Whaley announced the news Tuesday morning in his weekly appearance on Bills flagship station WGR Sportsradio 550.

“We found out late yesterday afternoon that Karlos Williams suffered a concussion,” said Whaley. “He’ll go through that concussion protocol this week. He told our trainers several hours after the game he wasn’t feeling well and our medical staff took a look at him. They put him through further evaluations Monday afternoon and determined that he had a concussion. We’re going to see how he proceeds throughout the week. With the concussion you just don’t know how they’re going to respond.”

Whaley said that Williams is going through the league’s concussion protocol. Williams status for playing on Sunday is certainly up in the air and with starting RB LeSean McCoy also a major question mark for the Titans game, the Bills have just Boobie Dixon and Cierre Wood as healthy running backs.

“We have confidence in the guys that we have in Boobie Dixon and Cierre Wood, who have been here,” said Whaley.

Whaley admitted they will take a look to see what is out there to find replenish the depth at the position. Former Bills RB Bryce Brown is an available free agent and Whaley admitted that he would be a possibility.

Buffalo’s GM did not rule Williams out for Sunday’s game.

“Karlos with that concussion protocol we’ll monitor him day to day and hopefully he’ll be in there at the end of the week,” Whaley said.

Young backs step up

Posted by Chris Brown on August 21, 2015 – 1:58 am

When Rex Ryan saw number 41 running onto the field with the offense he did a double take Thursday night. Jersey 41 is worn by CB Cam Thomas, who hasn’t participated in training camp due to injury, which was probably why Ryan was doing a double take before it dawned on him that it was one of his newest running backs Cierre Wood. Such was the situation for Buffalo’s offense as Wood was lining up for the first time with the Bills in a live preseason game with all of a couple of walk throughs to work off of.

“I swear I looked at 41 and thought he was DB and then it was, oh okay that’s Wood, bring the wood to them,” said Ryan.

The bottom line Thursday night was that rookies Bronson Hill, Ricky Seale and Wood all performed admirably considering that Hill has been with the team for just about two weeks and Seale and Wood four a couple of days.

“Those three did a nice job for us,” said Ryan. “Tip your hat to all three of those young men. They hadn’t been here long any of those guys. That shows you the kind of coach (running backs coach) Anthony Lynn is. We were walking through right up to game time almost and those young guys did a great job for us.”

“Coach A. Lynn did a good job of coaching up the running backs and putting him in the position where they could go out there and play comfortable. I think one of the running backs it was his first time with us today. He was with us in the walk through yesterday, but it was his first time actually taking a snap with us today. They all managed it well.”

Hill caught the game-winning two-point conversion with 1:31 to play and for the most part the backs proved capable in blitz pickup and other pass protection assignments.

“Those running backs, coach A. Lynn did a great job getting those guys geared up,” said EJ Manuel. “Hill did a great job, Wood did a great job coming in. John Conner he did a great job. Seale he did a great job as well. All those guys pitched in. To come in three days of practice and walk through and help us win on a game winning drive says a lot about those guys.”

ND RB Wood declares for draft

Posted by Chris Brown on January 15, 2013 – 12:46 pm

Citing his family as the main reason behind his decision, Notre Dame RB Cierre Wood has declared himself eligible for the 2013 NFL draft.

Wood (6’0″ 215) rushed for 742 yards and 4 TDs this past season, but had over 1,700 rushing yards and 12 TDs the two seasons prior. The NFL Advisory Council has reportedly told Wood he’s projected to be a third-round draft choice.

The Fighting Irish back joins fellow teammate TE Tyler Eifert as underclassmen entering the 2013 draft pool. Eifert is widely considered the draft class’ top tight end prospect.

Today (Tues. Jan. 15th) is the deadline for underclassmen to declare themselves eligible for the draft.
