WR options

Posted by Chris Brown on October 10, 2011 – 4:21 pm

The Bills in all likelihood won’t add a receiver right away with Donald Jones out for at least a month because they have Brad Smith as a fifth receiver option. But here are some realistic options should they choose to add another receiver in the next week or so.

Keep in mind that the Bills, if they choose to make an addition, will likely be looking for a player that can come in quickly and execute the system. Of course it’s always possible they consider a less familiar, but more talented option.

Kamar Aiken – 6’2″ 210 – The undrafted rookie had a good training camp, which is why he currently holds a spot on Buffalo’s practice squad. He has the size to play one of the outside receiver positions.

Craig Davis – 6’1″ 210 – The veteran wideout was an early training camp signing by the Bills this past summer and has a history with GM Buddy Nix from their San Diego days. He could be a consideration because of his familiarity with Buffalo’s offensive system.

Paul Hubbard – 6’2″ 215 – He was a final cut at the end of training camp and spent most of last season on Buffalo’s practice squad before a late season call up when injuries struck last year. Only the active roster is an option for him however, as he has no practice squad eligibility left.

WR Davis prognosis increased

Posted by Chris Brown on August 16, 2011 – 5:24 pm

Bills WR Craig Davis initially was thought to be sidelined for about three days with his undisclosed injury suffered Monday night. Now the length of time he’ll be out has been increased.

“He’s about a week,” said Gailey of the time Davis is expected to miss on the field.

That will put him out for the Bills next preseason game at Denver on Saturday.

WR groupings post Evans

Posted by Chris Brown on August 16, 2011 – 6:00 am

For those that missed it in Saturday’s preseason opener. Here were some of the more common receiver groupings with Lee Evans no longer a part of the equation.

In a regular pro set it was Donald Jones and Stevie Johnson.

In three wide it was Jones and Johnson with David Nelson in the slot. When Roscoe is healthy he’ll be the slot guy.

In four wide it was Jones, Johnson, Nelson and Roosevelt. When Roscoe is healthy he’ll be the third WR, with Nelson the fourth.

With the second unit it was mostly Marcus Easley and Craig Davis with Naaman Roosevelt in the slot.

When that group went four wide Felton Huggins was the fourth receiver. Paul Hubbard was rotated in with that group at times as well.

WR Davis to be out “for a while”

Posted by Chris Brown on August 15, 2011 – 8:43 pm

Bills head coach Chan Gailey provided an update on WR Craig Davis, who left practice early Monday night.

Gailey didn’t identify the nature of the injury, but said Davis wouldn’t be on the field any time soon.

“He strained something,” said Gailey. “I can’t remember what it was. We’ve got so many of those little nicks out there I don’t remember what it was. It’s going to be a while. It’s going to be a few days on him.”

Where Craig Davis will line up

Posted by Chris Brown on August 13, 2011 – 1:17 pm

The last few practice days leading up to tonight’s preseason opener Craig Davis has been getting an awful lot of reps, including some with the first team offense. Here’s where Davis will be lining up tonight against the Bears.

Davis will be lined up with the second unit playing in Stevie Johnson’s ‘X’ receiver role.

Head coach Chan Gailey told Buffalobills.com that all of Davis’ reps with the ones the past few days at practice was simply an effort to get him up to speed with the offense as quickly as possible.

Davis move makes more sense

Posted by Chris Brown on August 12, 2011 – 1:21 pm

The Bills acquisition of Craig Davis last week was a bit peculiar considering Buffalo’s depth at the receiver position. Now with Lee Evans traded, the most to acquire a veteran receiver makes a lot more sense.

Granted, Davis hasn’t put together much bigger stats than the second-year receivers on Buffalo’s roster, but it was clear in practices this week that they were anxious to get him in sync with the first team offense.

He was lining up in both Evans’ and Johnson’s outside receiver positions as he rotated in with the first unit each of the last two days. He got so many reps on Wednesday night that he got winded and had to come out of practice early.

I’m not sure that Davis is the long term answer for that role opposite Johnson because I know the organization believes Marcus Easley can be a number one or number two wideout in due time.

And in saying that I’m not dismissing David Nelson, Donald Jones or Naaman Roosevelt (Roscoe is the slot guy and not an outside guy). All of them will be in the mix and certainly capable.

We’ll just have to see who takes the opportunity and runs with it.

WR Craig Davis hasn’t seen much time on special teams in his career, but he’s looking to change that.

Davis needed change of scenery

Posted by Chris Brown on August 5, 2011 – 11:21 am

Bills newest wide receiver Craig Davis is glad he has this opportunity in Buffalo. After a difficult and trying four years in San Diego, he believes his NFL career needed a change of scenery.

“I definitely needed it,” said Davis. “I went through some injuries and some hard times in the past, but some new scenery here is going to be a good thing for me I think. It’s a great situation for me and I’m looking forward to it.”

Davis says he feels as healthy as ever and put in extra time to train his body for the past six months in an effort to prove he can hold up through a 16-game schedule.
