“Moose” says Marrone will be aggressive

Just a day after he was named the new Head Coach of the Buffalo Bills, Doug Marrone’s football connections continue to rave about his credentials.

Tuesday night on The John Murphy Show, Daryl “Moose” Johnston says Marrone will coach with an aggressive style when he takes over the Bills.

Johnston was a college teammate of Marrone’s at Syracuse University in the 1980s. Johnston spent his freshman and redshirt-freshman seasons watching Marrone act as one of the leaders of the Orange offensive line. And the former Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl Fullback says Marrone will install an aggressive style for the Bills.

“I anticipate Doug to be an aggressive guy, I really do,” Johnston said Tuesday night, when he appeared on The John Murphy Show. “I expect him to be an aggressive guy down the field. I expect him to be aggressive with his special teams play. I would expect the coordinators to be that style—it’s not going to be a ‘bend but don’t break’ style on defense.”

Johnston says Marrone was clearly a leader on Coach Dick MacPherson’s Syracuse teams of the early and mid eighties. And the former Cowboys fullback says he saw Marrone’s intelligence on display in the Syracuse meeting rooms back then.

“He was always a very intelligent player, always asking questions,” Johnston told John Murphy. “He always wanted to know a little bit more about the offense itself. I was not surprised at all that he went into coaching and has had the success at the many different levels that he has.”

Johnston agrees with most observers when he says that Marrone’s choice of a defensive coordinator for the Bills will be a critical decision. But he says his former Syracuse teammate is well equipped for the Head Coaching job in Buffalo, and gained valuable experience in his four years as a Head Coach at SU.

“The biggest transition is just the overall management of the day to day operations, all the things that come along with being a Head Coach,” according to Johnston.

“A lot of times we’ve seen coordinators that we thought would do well as head coaches, and sometimes they struggle a little bit. There’s so much more that goes into being a head coach.”

“One of the things that I’ve always been impressed with Doug was how well he handled the media—his press conferences. There are little things that you say and you do that kinda set the tone for the week, or give the players the right frame of mind after a tough loss. I think those are the things that Doug is going to do a good job at,” he said.

The John Murphy Show airs weeknights from 7-9pm on the flagship station of the Bills, WGR Sports Radio 550.

John Murphy Show for Tuesday night

Posted by johnmurphyshow on January 8, 2013 – 4:34 pm

More fallout from yesterday’s hiring of Doug Marrone as the new Head Coach of the Bills tonight on The John Murphy Show.

At 720pm, we’ll be live with Bills TE Scott Chandler. He’s a former teammate of Cowboys TE Jason Witten, and Witten had Marrone as his positon coach at the University of Tennessee back in 2001. We’ll ask Scott what he’s heard about Coach Marrone from Witten, and try to get a sense of what Bills players are thinking and saying about the new man in charge.

For the last week, there’s been a lot of buzz about the Bills push to employ football “analytics” in the future. New Team President Russ Brandon mentioned it last week, and Coach Marrone addressed it in his introductory news conference Monday. Tonight at 8pm, we’ll talk with analyst Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus about analytics, and how NFL teams are using the new information. Monson is one of the core team members at Pro Football Focus.

And as we continue to learn more about Doug Marrone, we’ll touch bases with one of his former college teammates tonight. Daryl “Moose” Johnston played at Syracuse University with Marrone in the mid 1980s. The Youngstown, New York native is now an analyst with the NFL on Fox, after an 11-year career as a fullback with the Cowboys. We’ll ask “Moose” about Marrone tonight at 820pm.

As always, we’ll make plenty of time for the news of the day and we’ll take phone calls from Bills fans.

The John Murphy Show airs weeknights from 7-9pm on the flagship station of the Bills, WGR Sports Radio 550.
