Tech WR torn up about foot

Posted by Chris Brown on February 26, 2010 – 10:18 pm

Georgia Tech WR Demaryius Thomas has been projected as high as the late first round. At 6’3″ 225 pounds he was recently being clocked with a 40 time of 4.38. But those kind of numbers will not be seen from Thomas at the combine thanks to a broken foot.

Thomas broke his foot last week while training in Phoenix. He was practicing the three-cone drill, one of the several agility drills at the combine. When Thomas reached the last cone he heard a pop. His fifth metatarsal was broken.

“It’s terrible,” he said sitting with a cast on his foot and crutches within arm’s reach. “It’s terrible. Once I did it I felt real bad, started crying and stuff because I wanted to participate in this. It just hurt my heart.”

Thomas wanted to compete and show off his rare speed for a man his size. He also wanted to prove the naysayers wrong and that he could run more than just go routes which were a large percentage of his big plays for the Yellow Jackets en route to an 1,154-yard receiving season last year, which included eight touchdowns.

Instead he’s just hoping he’ll have enough recovery to conduct a pro day before the draft.

“I take my cast off next week,” he said. “Next Thursday and I get a walking boot. I’m hoping to be back in four to five weeks and have a pro day.”

But no firm date has been set to this point. Thomas has to rely on his foot healing quickly, then he’ll need to make up the training time that he’s lost. With a screw in his foot to promote healing, it seems like a tough situation to pull off with time not on his side.
