Report: Bills interested in Denver OC McCoy

Posted by Chris Brown on January 1, 2013 – 2:03 pm

The Bills head coaching search team could be out west for a while if a Denver Post report is accurate. They’re reporting that Broncos offensive coordinator is on Buffalo’s radar, and Denver is granting permission per interviews under a specific timeline.

Per the report the Bills have asked permission to interview McCoy and the Broncos are granting interview opportunities so long as they take place between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening this weekend in Denver. The Broncos have their bye on Wild Card weekend.

One potential problem is the Cardinals and Bears have already set up interviews with McCoy for this weekend. Whether there is enough time for the Bills to do the same is unclear at this time.

Head coach search team heads west

Posted by Chris Brown on January 1, 2013 – 1:48 pm

Bills President and CEO Russ Brandon had a reason why he expressed an eagerness to get off the lectern at One Bills Drive during his press conference that announced he was taking organizational control of the team. He along with GM Buddy Nix and others are headed on a flight to Arizona to begin their head coaching search in earnest.

Appearing on Bills flagship station WGR Sportsradio 550, when asked where he might be headed to look for a new head coach said, “Arizona looks good this time of year.”

Joining him and Nix on the flight are Assitant GM Doug Whaley and Senior VP of Football Administration Jim Overdorf.

No word on what coaching candidates they could be meeting with, but members of the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff including now former head coach Ken Whisenhunt were relieved of their duties by that club Monday.

Report: Cards DC Horton in mix for Bills

Posted by Chris Brown on December 31, 2012 – 4:25 pm

As the coaching carousel begins to spin  across the NFL, a report out of Arizona is indicating that Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton is expected to draw interest from two NFL teams, one of which is the Bills.

The Arizona Republic is reporting that Horton is expected to draw interest from both the Bills and Browns, two teams now searching for a new head coach. Horton was not among the casualties in Arizona, where head coach Ken Whisenhunt, GM Rod Graves and Asst. head coach Russ Grimm were fired. Here’s the pertinent part what Republic Cardinals beat writer Kent Somers wrote.

Ray Horton will be a candidate for the head coaching job in Arizona. If he doesn’t get that one, or another one, he returns as DC. I’m hearing Horton is likely to interview with Cleveland and Buffalo, at the least.

When coaches on playoff teams can interview

Posted by Chris Brown on December 31, 2012 – 4:12 pm

With seven head coach openings in the NFL now, interviews with prospective replacements will begin in earnest across the league. Here is the timeline allowable by league rules for head coaching candidates currently coaching on playoff clubs.

Beginning now until Sunday January 6th, assistant coaches under contract to playoff teams that have byes in the Wild Card weekend may be interviewed for head coaching positions. The interview window lasts until the conclusion of the Wild Card games Sunday, which will be about 8 pm when the NFC Wild Card game between Seattle and Washington wraps up.

The next window of opportunity for clubs seeking to interview a head coaching candidate that is an assistant under contract to a playoff team that’s still alive (won Wild Card playoff game) would be the week of the Divisional playoff round (January 7th until January 13th), the Sunday of Divisional Playoff Games.
