Knowing where Watt is

Posted by Chris Brown on December 6, 2015 – 10:08 am

The Bills have a big task in front of them in the form of reigning Defensive Player of the Year and current AFC Defensive Player of the month for November, J.J. Watt. With free reign to line up anywhere across the Texans defensive formation everyone will need to be aware of where he chooses to line up pre-snap. TE Matthew Mulligan, who will probably be offering the offensive tackles help in pass protection and probably run blocking, knows what they’re up against.

“You’re going to feel his presence wherever he is on the field,” said Mulligan. “He’s a tremendous player. He’s savvy too. He’s not just a guy who will beat you with just brute force. He’s a guy who understands the game really well too and you can watch that. You’ve got to be fundamentally sound, everybody has to be on their ‘A’ game and you’ve got to know your assignments too. The second you have to start thinking against a guy like that is the second you get behind and then he’s making plays like he’s done his whole career.

“That’s where practice comes in and you continue to work with your guys. Like it is every week, it’ll take a team effort to play a defense that good and a player of his caliber.”

Watt misses practice, Hopkins limited

The Bills have a couple of nicked up offensive tackles in Cordy Glenn (knee) and Seantrel Henderson (illness), but their main adversary on Sunday isn’t fully healthy either. Houston’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year, J.J. Watt did not practice on Wednesday due to a groin injury.

Texans head coach Bill O’Brien said it was just a day off for Watt on Wednesday, so he’s expected to play Sunday.

Meanwhile Houston’s top receiver DeAndre Hopkins was limited in practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury and their starting running back Alfred Blue was limited with a back injury.

Wade Phillips has some tricks ready

Posted by Chris Brown on October 30, 2012 – 10:16 am

According to Texans DE J.J. Watt, Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will have some tricks up his sleeve for Sunday’s game against the Bills.

“He does. That’s what makes it so much fun,” said Watt, who has 9.5 sacks, 10 batted passes, 7.5 tackles for loss and 16 QB hits in seven games. “We’re making plays. We’re flying all over the field and we’re still not playing our best football. There are a lot of games left. We’ve got nine regular seasons left. We’re going to keep getting better every single week. You don’t want to peak too early. We’re still rolling. We’re still getting there.”

Phillips defense is ranked third overall, is fourth against the run and fifth against the pass. Houston’s ‘D’ is also sixth in points allowed (18.2 ppg).
