Dolphins asst. lived through Bills-Miami rivalry

Posted by johnmurphyshow on December 18, 2013 – 2:30 pm

Former Bills first round draft pick Jeff Burris had his share of matchups with Miami, when he played cornerback with the Bills from 1994-1997.

Now, he gets to renew that rivalry, when he comes to Orchard Park this Sunday as a Dolphins Assistant Coach. Burris is in his first year with Miami as a Defensive Assistant, handling quality control with a focus on the defensive backfield. He appeared on The John Murphy Show Tuesday night, and talked about the glory days of the Bills-Dolphins rivalry.

“When you think about the rivalry between the two teams,” Burris said, “you think about classic games, Marino versus Kelly, those were games you want to sit down and watch. We definitely want to get it back to that realm. I know Coach Marrone has done a great job in building his football team. And Coach Philbin has done a fantastic job with our team. We’re trying to get back on top of the AFC East, as is Buffalo, and hoping it happens sooner rather than later.”

Burris told host John Murphy the Buffalo-Miami rivalry lingers on, even in his family.

“Even family members, they talk about the games with the Dolphins, He said. “My daughter, who is 16 years old, was born in Buffalo, and it’s kinda funny. When she and I talk, she says I’ll root for you every week except when the Dolphins play the Bills. I said thanks. She better be just kidding.”

Former Bills 1st rounder now Dolphins asst.

Posted by johnmurphyshow on December 18, 2013 – 12:56 pm

He spent four years in a Bills uniform, and ten years overall playing defensive back in the NFL.

Now, Jeff Burris is on the sidelines with the Miami Dolphins, as a Defensive Assistant. Burris was Buffalo’s 1st round draft pick in 1994 out of Notre Dame. He left the Bills in 1998 and went on to play with the Colts and Bengals.

And after spending time on the Bills radio broadcast team and coaching high school football, Burris is back in the NFL as the Dolphins defensive assistant. He spends most of his time in quality control and working with Miami’s defensive backs.

“I was a little intimidated my first couple of weeks,” Burris sais this week, in an appearance on The John Murphy Show. “You go from coaching high school, and I was on the collegiate level last year (UMass). And then all of a sudden, you ‘re coaching guys that you’ve been at the position before. I love it. The preparation, the time, the effort you put into it, when you see the guys go out and perform well, it makes every second worth it.”

Burris says his ten years experience playing DB in the league gives him credibility when the Dolphins defensive backs have questions.

“It’s fun,” he said. “I get the guys, they come over and ask questions. The guys use it. We have veteran leadership on this team, like Reshard Jones and Dmitri Patterson. But it’s good. You understand the flow of the game, they’re coming over and making sure they’re doing things right.”

Gilmore’s tie to former Bills CB

Posted by Chris Brown on April 27, 2012 – 1:37 pm

Stephon Gilmore is a Rock Hill, SC native. There’s another former first-round pick that hails from the same exact town, but the connection goes further.

Bills 1994 first-round pick Jeff Burris is from Rock Hill, SC. Burris was the 27th overall pick and spent only his first four years with Buffalo before signing a big free agent deal with Indianapolis. Gilmore has met him, but was coached by a member of Burris’ family.

“Yeah I know Jeff Burris,” said Gilmore. “His brother actually coached me in high school so I met him a couple of times. He told me to enjoy myself down here (in Buffalo). There are great people around here. He said I will like it here.”
