Tight ends talked with Buffalo

Posted by Chris Brown on February 26, 2010 – 4:56 pm

Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham and Florida TE Aaron Hernandez just finished speaking with the media here at the NFL Combine and both confirmed that they have spoken with the Bills here in Indianapolis.

Gresham and Hernandez are considered among the top tight ends in the draft class. The reason NFL teams are usually interested in interviewing players is if they need a better gauge of their football IQ. Playing in spread attacks, Gresham and Hernandez didn’t have to run a lot of complex routes.

So NFL coaches will want to put them on the board and have them diagram things. Having not played at all last year, the interest in Gresham would be to see if he’s still sharp with football concepts.

Nevertheless with two of the top tight ends talking to Buffalo is interesting. Gresham is unlikely to be available in round two, but Hernandez could be there when the Bills pick 41st.

Early mocks favor TE for Bills

Posted by Chris Brown on January 7, 2009 – 9:13 pm

After perusing some of the NFL Draft sites for some early mocks, which we all know will change an infinite number of times, I found that tight end is the position that most of the “gurus” feel will be addressed by Buffalo, and Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham is the overwhelming choice.

But I was able to find a couple of other choices including Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson.  While he’s a freak 6’7″ 259 with uncommon speed for someone that size, I’m not sure he’s even a first-round pick so take these mocks with a grain of salt.

Here was an interesting pick from NFL Draft Blitz.

11. Buffalo Bills-Jason Smith, OT-Baylor

Bills’ fans have witnessed an amazing metamorphosis of Jason Peters from oversized college Tight End to Pro Bowl Left Tackle.  Peters, however, witnessed this as well and would like to be compensated.  He will price himself out of Buffalo and the fast-rising Smith will remedy that predicament.

While Jason Smith is certainly a talent and a likely first-rounder, 11 may be a bit high. But the take is certainly an interesting one.

McShay has Bills taking TE

Posted by Chris Brown on January 6, 2009 – 6:34 pm

For what it’s worth (knowing this will likely change 50 times) ESPN’s Todd McShay has the Bills taking Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham with the 11th pick in his mock draft. Personally I’d like to see a pass rushing DE.

Gresham has impressive numbers as is the case with just about every skill position offensive player for Oklahoma this year with 58 catches for 888 yards and 12 TDs. He’s 6’5″ 266.

He’s got good all-around talent with long arms and soft hands. So he’s an interesting prospect, but again I’d like to see the Bills address the pass rush first.
