We’re on our way to Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile for one last look at the South team. Today should be little more than a walk through for both teams, with the game itself coming up Saturday.
Our conversations with Bills decision makers this week here in Mobile left little doubt about how strongly committed the team is to QB EJ Manuel after his rookie year. But the Bills scouts no doubt have enjoyed what they’ve seen from a couple of South QBs.
Fresno State’s Derek Carr is undoubtedly the top quarterback at the Senior Bowl this week. The younger brother of David Carr, Derek has elite arm talent and has had a very good week of practice in Mobile, throwing the ball well through some stiff winds in a couple of workouts.
And Carr has a healthy dose of confidence about his ability also.
“I’m always confident,” he told us Wednesday, “I could throw four picks and I’m still going to be confident. That’s just my mindset. I just want to come out here and show these teams that I could be their franchise quarterback.”
Carr wears number 4 here, as he did at Fresno, an homage to another QB who had a pretty healthy dose of self-confidence: Brett Favre.
Carr’s teammate on the South is the surprise star of the Senior Bowl workouts. Eastern Illinois” Jimmy Garappolo only got invited to the Senior Bowl last week, when Alabama’s A.J. McCarron pulled out. Garappolo had an outstanding performance at the EAst-West Shrine Game last week in Florida, and he picked up where he left off this week in Mobile. He’s very intelligent with a quick release, if not an especially strong arm.
Garappolo will be our guest tonight on The John Murphy Show podcast.
