CB Josh Thomas to start vs. Bills Sunday

Posted by Chris Brown on September 13, 2013 – 1:18 pm

He gave up the game-winning touchdown pass to the Seahawks last week in Carolina’s Week 1 loss to Seattle, but CB Josh Thomas will remain in the Panthers starting lineup on defense.

That according to the Charlotte Observer, who quoted Panthers head coach Ron Rivera as saying the following about the University at Buffalo alum.

“It was one bad play,” Rivera said. “Hopefully, it doesn’t become two.”

Carolina doesn’t have too many other options. Fourth corner James Dockery is out Sunday with a thumb injury. Josh Norman is the Panthers’ nickel corner, but he lines up outside and kicks starting corner Captain Munnerlyn to the slot.

UB’s Josh Thomas visiting Jets

Posted by Chris Brown on April 13, 2011 – 11:59 am

University at Buffalo CB Josh Thomas is making a pre-draft visit with the New York Jets today in New Jersey.

That according to the team’s official website. Considered by most draft forecasters as middle to late round pick, Thomas is seen as a prospect that can help in nickel packages according to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper who likes the depth at cornerback in the draft class this year.

“The depth at cornerback goes into the fourth or fifth round,” said Kiper. “There are some good nickel back guys like Justin Rogers out of Richmond as a fifth or sixth round nickel guy. Buster Skrine from Chattanooga is moving up after the way he tested at the combine and played at Chattanooga. Josh Thomas the kid at Buffalo is a guy that could play nickel as a fifth or sixth rounder. So cornerback has a lot of depth.”

Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi, UCLA’s Akeem Ayers, Stanford DT Sione Fua, Louisville RB Bilal Powell and Texas CB Chykie Brown are also visiting with the Jets today.

Tough break for UB DB

Posted by Chris Brown on March 10, 2011 – 12:07 pm

UB’s pro day is being held at One Bills Drive today (Thursday) in the Bills Fieldhouse and unfortunately one of the top prospects could not finish his workout.

UB safety Davonte Shannon pulled his left hamstring running his second 40 time and limped across the end line. Shannon had been having a solid day with 18 reps on the bench, a 41 1/2 inch vertical and 10’6″ broad jump. His first 40 time was 4.57. He’s projected as a late round pick.

Fellow DB Josh Thomas, who also was invited to the NFL combine slightly improved his 4.46 40 time in Indy with a 4.44 today. He also improved his broad jump with a 10’8″ today and his vertical reaching 40 inches. Thomas is also seen as a late round prospect.

UB’s Thomas not after advice

Posted by Chris Brown on March 1, 2011 – 7:45 am

UB cornerback Josh Thomas, who tests at the NFL combine later today (Tuesday) has not sought advice from some of the UB players that have gone before him and landed roster spots in the NFL.

Thomas had both Naaman Roosevelt and James Starks as teammates at UB, but he chose not to bug either of them for advice.

“Naaman and James I didn’t want to bother them,” said Thomas. “Starks just won the Super Bowl and I know everyone is blowing him up (calling him). Naaman I know he’s low key in Buffalo. So I’ve just been really focused and working really hard on what I need to do.”

Of course in no way does that mean that Thomas doesn’t appreciate those UB players that initially laid out the path to the NFL and convinced NFL talent evaluators that there is pro talent at Buffalo.

“Once those first two guys, Trevor Scott and Jamey Richard went out and sustained a position in the NFL it just gave everybody else confirmation that UB is just as elite as any other big name school,” Thomas said. “They definitely paved the way and gave me confidence when they went.”

Thomas is hoping to run in the low 4.4s possibly high 4.3s at the combine. He’s forecast as a late round pick.

UB corner ready to run

Posted by Chris Brown on February 27, 2011 – 2:59 pm

University at Buffalo CB Josh Thomas is the only local prospect at the NFL combine and intends to show well in workouts.

“I plan on running in the low 4.4s possibly high 4.3s on Tuesday,” said Thomas.

Thomas is a very experienced cornerback having appeared in 47 games in his college career and a good tackler with five forced fumbles in his career.  His 29 career PBUs are the fifth most in school history. Thomas is forecast as a late round pick.
