Dunbar: Bills D-line has underrated depth

Posted by Chris Brown on April 13, 2015 – 2:49 pm

Everybody knows that Buffalo’s starting defensive line has three Pro Bowl players and a fourth who has 20 sacks in the last two seasons. But what about the second wave of defensive linemen?

Bills new defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, is just getting to know his new players, but he believes he’s got a second wave of D-linemen that surpass the quality he had when coaching the Jets defensive line.

“I think (Jarius) Wynn, Stefan Charles  and some of the guys we have (Corbin Bryant) I’m looking back at what we had in New York, not to take shots at anybody, but the depth they have here is better than the depth that I had with the Jets,” said Dunbar. “You had a lot of guys who played a lot here last year. The backups in New York didn’t play as much as they backups did here. That might’ve been my fault, but they didn’t, so I like what we have and some of the guys we brought back here I’m pretty happy with what we have.”

Dunbar has had some talented defensive lines in his time as an NFL assistant. He had the ‘Williams Wall’ in Minnesota with Pat and Kevin Williams along with Jared Allen and Ray Edwards. He then had the Jets with Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson anchoring New York’s DL. Now however, he might have not only the most athletic collection of defensive linemen, but among the deepest.

Kyle familiar with DL coach Dunbar

Posted by Chris Brown on January 23, 2015 – 1:31 pm

Bills new defensive line coach Karl Dunbar might be new to many of Buffalo’s defensive linemen, but he’s not to Pro Bowl DT Kyle Williams.

Williams had Dunbar as his college position coach as a senior at LSU.

“Yeah I’m a little familiar with him,” Williams told Buffalobills.com while in Arizona for the Pro Bowl. “He recruited me to LSU when I was coming out of high school, left and took another job and then came back and was my D-line coach for my senior year. So I’m excited to have Dunbar again, it kind of feels like my career has come full circle. I’m excited about Rex Ryan and really excited about next year and what the possibilities are.”

Williams has always kept a casual eye on Dunbar wherever he’s coached and having worked with him in the past has a feel for the type of coach he is.

“I think if you look at him and his defensive career his defensive lines are technically sound,” said Williams. “They’re aggressive and they’re really, really hard to run the football against and those are things we can always use improvement on.”

Donnie Henderson to remain on staff

Posted by Chris Brown on January 15, 2015 – 1:07 pm

The Bills named a handful of assistant coaches who will serve under new head coach Rex Ryan Thursday. They include defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman, DL coach Karl Dunbar, LBs coach Bobby April III, DBs coach Tim McDonald, TEs coach Tony Sparano Jr., Asst. DL coach Jeff Weeks, special teams assistant Eric Smith and asst. strength and conditioning coach Jason Oszvart. Even though McDonald has the same title as incumbent DBs coach Donnie Henderson, Henderson will remain on the staff.

Head coach Rex Ryan made note of Henderson being retained in his introductory press conference Wednesday. Henderson, who coached with Ryan in Baltimore, will coach defensive backs with McDonald.

Special teams coordinator Danny Crossman was retained by Ryan as well, which was also announced Wednesday. An announcement about other holdover assistants from the previous coaching staff is forthcoming.
