Silva never spoke to Marrone

Posted by Chris Brown on August 7, 2013 – 2:15 pm

The departure from Bills training camp by Mana Silva was so abrupt that the reserve safety never even spoke to head coach Doug Marrone before leaving the St. John Fisher campus.

That according to coach Marrone, who never got the reasons why Silva chose to quit the team.

“He’s on the exempt/left camp list,” said Marrone. “I found out really when I was on the field Monday night. I had to go speak to the Monday Quarterback Club and I had to speak to the veterans. I found out when I was in transition there. He did not contact me or speak to me about his decision in terms of why or what. I’m concentrating on the guys that are here.”

For most coaches when a player doesn’t have the desire to compete anymore allowing the player to return is not going to happen. What surprised Marrone more than anything was Silva not even trying to make contact with him.

“If it’s a personal thing I would like to expect the player to come to me and say, ‘I have this going on I would like to be excused,’” said Marrone.

As Marrone sees it, unless there’s an extreme circumstance he’d not welcome the player back.

“I don’t know his situation, but 99 percent of the time I’d be like, ‘No, let’s clear that up and move on and go,’” said Marrone. “But if it’s a case of I don’t know if I want to be on a team or compete, in my experience I think it’s been very hard to try to talk somebody into playing.”

Bills have contingencies at safety

Posted by Chris Brown on July 9, 2013 – 10:09 am

While the Jairus Byrd franchise tender remains unsigned by the Pro Bowl safety, Buffalo hasn’t sat idly by hoping the situation get resolved sooner rather than later. Buffalo drafted a pair of safeties and transitioned Aaron Williams from corner to safety early in the spring practices.

Williams showed promise as he was one of the two leading interceptors in the spring workouts in Buffalo’s secondary. His confidence appeared to grow, as well as the confidence the defensive staff has in him.

“I think he’s ahead of schedule of where we thought he would be,” said Mike Pettine of Williams. “He’s flashed just the things that we saw in him as far as being a safety. He’s had some interceptions and obviously his range his ability to get sideline to sideline is obviously something we’re going to take advantage of.”

Buffalo also drafted a pair of safeties in the middle rounds in Duke Williams and Jonathan Meeks. Though it appears that Williams will see some time at cornerback too. Da’Norris Searcy, Dominique Ellis and Mana Silva are other options that have seen time with the top two defensive lineups in the spring.

None of them have Byrd’s experience and none of them are proven commodities at that position in the NFL. It’ll certainly be a position that bears watching in training camp whether Byrd signs and reports or not.

Bills lose practice squader

Posted by Chris Brown on December 13, 2011 – 12:12 pm

The Bills lost a practice squad safety today (Tuesday) to the Dallas Cowboys.

Losing safety Barry Church to a season-ending shoulder injury, the Cowboys signed S Mana Silva off the Bills practice squad. Silva was only on the Bills eight-man practice unit for a month after signing with Buffalo on Nov. 10th.

The Cowboys also signed a former Bills running back in veteran Sammy Morris, a former fifth-round pick of the Bills in 2000. He replaced Dallas’ DeMarco Murray who went on injured reserve with a broken ankle suffered Sunday night.

The Bills now have a vacant spot on their practice squad.

The Bills filled the vacancy on their practice squad with a defensive back Thursday.

Buffalo signed DB Mana Silva. The University of Hawaii prospect is a safety and had 14 interceptions for the Rainbows as a two-year starter. Silva entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Baltimore in July before being released prior to the regular season.

Silva is wearing jersey number 33.
