Six days into NFL free agency, and the Bills have just one signing. Linebacker Manny Lawson was signed to the roster last Wednesday.
And even though the slow pace of signings has some Bills fans concerned, an NFL analyst and writer from Grantland.com says there’s very little value in the players signed in the first few days of free agency.
Bill Barnwell is a football analytics specialist for Grantland.com. He appeared on The John Murphy Show last Friday to talk about the early NFL free agent signings.
“The reality is, and this is hard to remember right now, but nobody’s ever won a Super Bowl in March,” Barnwell said. “They don’t award them in March.”
Barnwell wrote on Grantland.com last week that the first day of free agency is “the Dumbest Day of the NFL Year.”
The reality is, if you look at teams that spend the most in these free agency deals,” Barnwell said on the radio show, “they’re not winning teams. The Redskins were famous for it over the last decade or so, and they were crowned with the unofficial title of “offseason champs,” and they were not winning football games. The Dolphins made a big splash two years ago, and they did not do very well. And I don’t think they’re going to do very well with their big splash this year.”
Barnwell acknowledges it’s difficult for fans to sit back and watch their team move slowly through free agency, while other teams make big, splashy early moves.
“It’s tough,” he told host John Murphy. “You want to be in the news and you want to be involved. But think about last year. The Bills signed the best free agent available, and were they a significantly better team? I don’t think so.”
